Use AI to practise, not to perform.

A developer job hunt in India with AI as a coach before each stage and never a crutch during one: six prompts for search, applications and interviews, which job sites have an official AI connector, and why the unofficial ones risk your account. As of 2026.10.

According to LinkedIn's India research, 94% of job seekers plan to use AI in their job search, and 84% feel unprepared. Applicants per job have more than doubled since 2022. When everyone hands the same chatbot the same job description, the applications start to look alike, and recruiters notice. The way through is one rule: use AI to practise before each stage, never to perform during one.

The market, in numbers

Naukri's JobSpeak for September 2026 calls Indian hiring steady but increasingly selective. White-collar hiring rose 2% year on year (index 3,053). Inside that:

SegmentChange, Sept 2026 YoY
AI/ML roles+20%
GCCs+4%
Freshers+1%
IT/software services−4%
Hyderabad+9%
Bengaluru+4%

Meanwhile, more than half of the recruiters who say hiring got harder blame AI-generated applications, and almost half say the extra screening slows them down. Canva found in January 2025 that 87% of Indian job seekers use generative AI on their resumes, and hiring managers warned of a "sea of similar applications". Generic output doesn't get you noticed. Specific, honest practice does.

Practise, don't perform

The job hunt has three stages: search, apply, interview. Before each one, AI is a good coach: it can find patterns in job descriptions, point out gaps in your resume and play an interviewer who never gets tired. During the interview, it's a crutch, and firms are now built to catch it.

One platform, InCruiter, reviewed more than 20,000 interview recordings and found nearly 1 in 3 candidates using AI during live interviews (vendor data, reported by ET in May 2026). The responses are already in place:

  • Deloitte India runs case-led interviews with follow-up questions that test real understanding.
  • Meesho uses secure browsers, video analytics and human rounds.
  • HackerRank's Proctor Mode flags suspicious behaviour, records a session replay with screenshots of outside tools and checks code similarity. Gaze detection arrived in July 2026.

And a hire who can't repeat the performance on the job gets found out anyway.

Six prompts, one per job

Each of these is practice. None of them puts words in your mouth during a round.

  1. Search. Paste three job descriptions you want. "List the skills that appear in all three, then write a Naukri keyword search and a LinkedIn boolean string for them." Set alerts, and check every posting on the company's own careers page: fake-offer scams copy big brands.
  2. Tailor your resume. The prompt below. Keep the layout single-column and plain text.
  3. Referral note. "Write a 60-word LinkedIn note to an engineer at X: the job ID, one concrete line from my project, my notice period, and a referral ask. No flattery."
  4. Online assessment practice (HackerRank, HackerEarth). Solve it yourself first, then paste your code. "Don't give the solution. Give one hint, my time complexity, and an edge case I missed."
  5. Mock interview. In voice mode: "You're an SDE-2 interviewer at a Bengaluru GCC. Ask one question at a time and follow every answer with two levels of 'why'. Score me at the end." That trains exactly the follow-up that catches people who lean on AI live.
  6. Company research. "Summarise this company's engineering blog and its latest results, then give me 3 sharp questions to ask." Then check what it says against the sources.

The resume prompt is the one people get most wrong, because the easy version invents things:

tailor-resume.txt
Here's my resume and this job description.
List the keywords from the job description that my resume is missing.
Rewrite only from facts I give you, and ask me for numbers.
Never invent anything.

Let the chatbot search the job board

A connector, built on MCP (the Model Context Protocol), lets a chatbot call a job site's tools directly, so you stop pasting listings in. Connectors cover search and prep. They don't apply for you, and they have no place in an interview.

Indeed is the only job site with official connectors.

  • In ChatGPT, the Indeed app (type @Indeed) launched in the US on 2026.02.10 and, according to a trade report, in India and 50+ other countries on 2026.05.01. You still apply on Indeed's site or app.
  • In Claude, there's an "Anthropic verified" connector made by Indeed, listed since November 2025; you sign in with your Indeed account, and remote connectors need a paid Claude plan. Indeed's docs (beta, updated 2026.09.12) list four tools: Job Search (with salary and apply URL), Job Detail, Get Resume and Get Company Data. Get Resume only reads your Indeed profile to personalise results; it doesn't write resumes. Claude's directory lists two of the four, and nothing I found says whether this connector covers India. For India, the confirmed route is Indeed's app in ChatGPT.
  • Neither one applies for you. The connector exposes no apply action.

LinkedIn has no official connector or MCP server. The community MCP servers mostly run on your li_at session cookie or a headless browser logged in as you. That breaks §8.2 of LinkedIn's User Agreement, which bans scripts, robots, browser plugins and add-ons, and other unauthorised automated methods, and LinkedIn says such automation can get your account restricted, temporarily or permanently. The safe alternative: Settings & Privacy → Data Privacy → "Get a copy of your data". The export arrives within 24 hours and the link lasts 72. Paste it, or your profile PDF, into the chat.

Naukri has no official API, MCP server or chatbot app. The community MCP servers are built on reverse-engineered endpoints and carry the same account risk. Skip them.

I found no job-platform connector for Gemini. With Indeed connected and your CV attached, a good first prompt is:

indeed-connector.txt
Find backend developer jobs in Bengaluru posted this week,
rank the top 5 against my resume,
and list the skills I'm missing for each.

Then open each job on the company's careers page and apply yourself.

What people get wrong

  • "AI help during the interview is the new normal." Firms are redesigning their rounds around catching it: follow-up questions, secure browsers, proctoring.
  • "The connector applies for me." Neither Indeed integration applies. They search; you apply.
  • "An unofficial LinkedIn MCP server is fine if it works." It runs as you, on your login, against a user agreement that bans it. The account at risk is yours.
  • "The AI can fill in the numbers." A resume line you can't defend in a follow-up is worse than no line at all.

If I were hiring for a client team, the candidate I'd remember is the one who answers the second "why" without pausing, and that only comes from practice.

The short version

  1. Hiring in India is steady but selective: white-collar +2% in Sept 2026, AI/ML roles +20%.
  2. Use AI before each stage (search, apply, interview prep), never during a round.
  3. One platform found nearly 1 in 3 candidates using AI live; firms now probe with follow-ups and proctoring.
  4. Indeed is the only job site with official connectors; in India, use its app in ChatGPT. Neither applies for you.
  5. Skip unofficial LinkedIn and Naukri MCP servers; use LinkedIn's data export instead.
